The original intent of Labor Day was to “show appreciation” to those who do the actual labor. It developed in the late 19th century as a result of the labor movement. In 1882, New York City played host to the first such event. In 1894, Congress declared Labor Day a legal holiday.

Today, Labor Day weekend marks the end of summer and is a great time to relax and spend time with loved ones in familiar surroundings. With classes already in session in some areas and soon to begin in others, those three days off are ideal for some low-key recreation away from the throngs of people at the beach, the lake, and the shopping centers.

Here are some alternatives to spending Labor Day in the backyard that the whole family can get behind if you’re looking for something fun to do together.

Take A Hike

Weekends around Labor Day are ideal for outdoor activities like hiking with the family. Try out a few different trails in the area, paying special attention to those that are kid-friendly. Hike in the early morning hours if the weather forecast calls for high temperatures. Expect milder temperatures. Bring an afternoon snack for the kids and a full water bottle.

Biking Trip

As with walking, a bike ride on a path can be enjoyed by the whole family. Young cyclists can ride at their own pace without having to worry about traffic on bike paths. A paved path is preferable when going on a family bike ride with novice riders, especially if you have young children in the group. Carry some water and light snacks with you. Set aside some time for rest stops along the way.

Pay a Zoo a Visit

On Labor Day weekend, the zoo is a great alternative to the beach, lake, or theme park that many families choose to visit. Visits to zoos, especially the larger ones, are fun for kids of all ages, from toddlers to teenagers. If you’re planning a trip to the zoo, you should definitely check their website first.

Mini-Golf

And who doesn’t like a good game of mini-golf? Mini golf with 18 holes is fun for the whole family, including preteens and teenagers. You can find a course within driving distance if there isn’t one in your immediate area. Complete the mini golf trip with a meal and some frozen treats.

Set Up Camp

Try a backyard campout this Labor Day weekend if you’ve always wanted to take the family camping but aren’t sure if they’re up for the adventure. Everyone can relax and enjoy the night sky without having to worry about getting up early for class or practice. Get some friends together, set up a tent in the backyard, and play some outdoor games like ring toss or corn hole. With a toilet that doesn’t necessitate a bucket or a privacy tent, children can enjoy the outdoors without missing out on activities like catching fireflies or making s’mores.
