Whether you consider Memorial Day to be the beginning of the summer, the beginning of the season for picnics and barbecues, or simply a day well spent with family and friends, it is important to remember the true meaning of this day, which is to remember those who have served in the military of the United States of America.
The weekend of Memorial Day is a great time to spend time with family and friends. Also, the weekend is a good time to show respect to people who served in the military. So, we put together a list of some of our favourite ways to celebrate that are fun for the whole family.
5 Things to Do on Memorial Day Weekend
Most of the time, summer starts after Memorial Day weekend. We look forward to some sunshine and warmer weather all through the winter. We can’t wait to get some fresh air and spend time outside. Last but not least, we can’t wait to laugh with our friends and family. So, here are some of our favourite things to do over the Memorial Day weekend to help you get started.
1. Attend A Parade!
Attend a parade to honour the people who have served. This is a traditional thing to do on Memorial Day that the whole family will enjoy. Check with your town hall or community centre to find out about parades in your area. Or, if you’re not sure what parades are in your area, you can do a quick Google search for “memorial day parade” and see what comes up.
2. Have A Cookout With Family And Friends On Memorial Day Weekend
Memorial Day BBQs are a great time to get together with family and friends. For example, you can make your home and yard feel patriotic by decorating with red, white, and blue items. Don’t forget to include a patriotic theme in your menu as well!
Also, take a moment during your party to remember the National Moment of Remembrance. The National Moment of Remembrance asks all Americans to stop at 3:00 p.m. on Memorial Day, no matter where they are. This is a great way to honour the real meaning of Memorial Day while also spending time with your friends and family.
3. Give Your Time
One of the best ways to give back on Memorial Day and all year long is to volunteer. Call your local Veterans Service Center before Memorial Day weekend to see if they need help. You and your family can bring sweet treats to share while you watch movies, read books, or play games that you like. Even just being with you will make their day.
4. Make Care Packages For People In The Military
Through programmes, you and your family can put together with care packages for military members who are serving overseas and send them to them. Some great things to include are crafts, homemade cards, and personal care items. Take the time over the Memorial Day weekend to make care packages for people who are serving in the military. For example, this is a great way to thank the people who serve our country and make memories with your whole family!
5. Surprise The People In The Military And Veterans Who Live In Your Area
Do you know the people who have served or are serving in your community? Visit them and give them a thoughtful gift and a handmade card as a surprise!
